辽沈战役打响之前，王顺拿着爹画给他的一张图纸上萝北县城找爹的好友“赵山东”。因为街头发生的一起爆炸案，王顺让驻守县城的东北民主联军某连战士当做疑犯抓走。县城接连发生几起爆炸案，给当地群众带来伤亡的同时，更引起不好的反映。为了给群众一个交代，分区决定枪决一批犯人，王顺的名字首当其冲。
第二天清晨，王顺从禁闭室里出来尿尿，在空气中嗅出一股胡子的味道，让驻城的一个连队避免了重大的伤亡。胡子突然来袭，占领县城制高点，守城连队奉命撤出县城，王顺捡起一条长枪，干掉几个胡子后随队撤退。王顺随队撤出县城后打算就此逃走，途中看到一个女战士落入胡子之手，遂开枪击毙四个胡子，救出卫生员林红。
林红听王顺说了他的事，觉得王顺不像坏人，劝王顺随她归队。王顺随林红找到连队集结地姚家湾，王副连长当即命令索班长又将王顺当疑犯给捆了起来。连队得到情报，袭击县城的一小股胡子正向天柱峰方...
